- Victims of MtGox exchange will start getting their money back after more than a decade.
- Despite the massive bitcoin release to come, the bitcoin FUD price drop could be an overstretch.
Victims could be Japanese digital currency trading platform MtGox, which was hacked for about 850,000 Bitcoin (BTC) in 2011 get their money back already this month. According to the latest update, the repayments are set to resume by the 10th of this month and are expected to be completed by September this year.
The MtGox Hack is considered one of the largest in the history of the digital currency ecosystem. The hack was unprecedented and its victims, although distraught at the time, many of the hack’s victims have already moved on, with some already writing off their frozen assets on the stock exchange as a loss.
One of them is Blockstream CEO Adam Back, who noted that any payback he receives now will be a big boom for his savings.
Well, for myself, I had pretty much written off the bitcoin I had on Mt. Gox back in 2014 as a loss, so philosophically anything I’m getting back now is a cold store bonus,” said Adam Back, CEO of block stream. called in a statement shared via Telegram, adding: “It’s dragged on for many more years than anyone expected, so it’s sure to be welcomed by all creditors to finally get paid.
Possible MtGox withdrawals and possible delays
How after a tough restructuring plan, not all of the funds in the MtGox balance sheet are released to creditors. In fact, the decision to make any form of repayment required more than a decade of work with bankruptcy trustees.
The sum shared with the beneficiaries totals 142,000 bitcoin ($3.3 billion today), 143,000 bitcoin cash ($19 million) and 69 billion yen ($510 million). These figures are consistent with a previously published balance sheet from 2021.

The repayment model depends on the total amount each beneficiary has on the defunct exchange. For creditors whose total amount is around 200,000 yen, repayment will be made in fiat. Those with more locked funds will be paid out 71% in crypto and 29% in fiat.
A major challenge envisaged so far in the eventual release of the funds could be a delay in crypto trading platforms. Many of the exchanges have highlighted the timeline that funds will be processed with Kraken and will likely take up to 90 days.

Coming Drop For Bitcoin Price?
There is currently a massive concern in the industry as recipients of the funds could go on a sales spree and dump their bitcoin. Bitcoin price is already in a far better place in terms of valuation than it was at the time of the MtGox hack. Therefore, when they receive their share, many are encouraged to sell.
But fears that this could trigger a dip towards the $10,000 support level is an overstatement as many beneficiaries could still choose to HODL their holdings.
