Unknown wallet sends $1.2 million BTC to Satoshi Nakamoto

An unidentified individual initiated a transaction on January 5 and deposited 26.9 BTC worth approximately $1.19 million into the Genesis wallet – the first wallet ever created on the Bitcoin (BTC) network by the pseudonymous entity named Satoshi Nakamoto.

This transaction took place at 1:52 a.m. ET, two days after Bitcoin celebrated its 15th anniversary, and was notable because it was impossible to retrieve.

On-chain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence reported that the owner of the mysterious wallet funded the Bitcoins through complicated transactions using different addresses before depositing them into the Genesis wallet.

Arkham Intelligence also revealed that the majority of the funds were traced to a wallet said to be owned by Binance.

Shortly before the transfer to the Satoshi Nakamoto wallet, the mysterious sender withdrew almost 27 BTC from the Binance exchange, with the wallet's activity log recording only these two transactions.

Since the law requires strict KYC procedures for crypto exchanges like Binance, some believe that the identity of the person behind the transfer to Nakamoto's wallet may be known to the Binance compliance team.

Reacting to the news, Conor Grogan, director of Coinbase, humorously commented: “Either Satoshi woke up, bought 27 Bitcoins from Binance and deposited them into his wallet, or someone just burned a million dollars.”

The Genesis wallet, famously the brainchild of Bitcoin's pseudonymous inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, has accumulated mostly trivial dust transactions since its launch on January 3, 2009.

While it is theoretically possible that Nakamoto still holds the private keys to these wallets and could transfer the funds, the prevailing wisdom is that this is highly unlikely.

Proof of this assumption is that funds from wallets linked to Nakamoto, including funds from the Genesis block, have not moved since the Bitcoin inventor disappeared in December 2010.

When Nakamoto disappeared, the Genesis wallet initially contained 50 BTC. However, over the years, the wallet has seen an inflow of funds, reaching 72 BTC by the end of 2023. This latest transaction increased the wallet's balance to approximately 99.68 BTC, which is equivalent to approximately $4.3 million at current rates.

In the wake of this unexpected transaction, crypto enthusiasts have put forward several theories about it.

Some consider it a tribute to Bitcoin's creator, considering it took place two days after Bitcoin's 15th anniversary. Others speculate that it could be a massive financial mistake or a costly publicity stunt.

At the same time, some see it as an attempt to stoke euphoria ahead of the expected approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
