Uniswap is considering a proposal to enrich token holders and introduce liquidity pool fees

Community members at decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap are considering a proposal to introduce fees for many of their liquidity pools. This is the latest development in a long-running debate about Uniswap’s protocol fees and broader finance.

By imposing fees on the pools, the Uniswap protocol could replenish its coffers and grant rewards to holders of the protocol’s native Uniswap (UNI) token. Uniswap’s decision to further monetize its platform by introducing fees on a large portion of its version three (v3) liquidity pools and all of its version two (v2) pools could also set a precedent for the large DeFi ecosystem, which also owns Uniswap has captured around 70% market share.

“If Uniswap can monetize and bring in all those dollars by building a really great open-source protocol that’s going to be leveraged, then that’s going to encourage other people to do the same,” said Getty Hill, the author of the proposal. to CoinDesk. “I hope this will change some of those industry norms.”

Uniswap v2 has a total value of almost $1.2 billion and has seen an average daily volume of around $367 million on Ethereum over the past week, data from DefiLlama shows. Meanwhile, Uniswap v3, which is used on SushiSwap, Curve, Balance and PancakeSwap, among others, has a total value of around 2.9 billion US dollars.

The mechanism by which the protocol would collect these fees, where those fees would go, and what kind of initiatives the tokens would fund is up for debate, Hill said. Users will clarify these details in community-based discussions before the proposal is formally voted on.

This isn’t the first time community members have called to enable Uniswap liquidity pool fee conversions. Last summer, a proposal to charge fees caused controversy within the Uniswap community. Ultimately, the proposal did not get enough traction, and opponents expressed fears that the move could have broader tax implications for the protocol and its users.
