- The feature has been seen in beta versions of Twitter in the past.
- Twitter’s Jack Dorsey is a well-known supporter of cryptocurrency and has already spent millions supporting these tokens.
- Twitter’s head of product has all but confirmed the feature, although we don’t know when full rollout will happen.
Microblogging platform Twitter may be developing ways for users to accept payments in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile developer from Italy, tweeted screenshots suggesting that Twitter will soon allow users to add their Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses to their profiles.
The feature appears to be part of Twitter’s recently announced Tip Jar feature, which allows users to tip influencers for their content — not to be confused with Super Follows, which allow influencers to provide premium content to paid subscribers. It’s unclear if Twitter will eventually allow cryptocurrencies to be subscribed to via Super Follows.
While Paluzzi has a track record of reliable leaks, this particular treat comes with added support. His tweet was retweeted by Kavyon Beykpour, Twitter’s head of product. Beykpour simply put a lightning bolt emoji on the retweet, which may not be confirmation but is probably as close as Twitter can get to confirming a feature like this in advance.
The rumor mill is churning
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time Twitter has been working on adding cryptos to its platform. A report by MacRumors last month also said that Twitter’s beta users saw tutorials about bitcoin on Tip Jar in this release. “Details in the latest Twitter beta indicate that users will be guided through a bitcoin tutorial detailing the Bitcoin Lightning Network and custodial and non-custodial Bitcoin wallets,” the report reads.
Jack Dorsey’s love of Bitcoin
More importantly, Twitter Chief Executive Officer and founder Jack Dorsey is a well-known supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. On the company’s conference call in July this year, Dorsey told investors that Bitcoin will be a “big part” of Twitter’s future. Of course, he didn’t provide any details on how the cryptocurrency would be taken up, but at least that’s confirmation that Twitter isn’t opposed to collaborating with crypto tokens.
Cryptocurrencies are no stranger to Dorsey either. His payments company, Square, has already talked about adding Bitcoin to its platform. Dorsey himself has also talked about building a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange. In February of this year, Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z had invested 500 bitcoins, worth over $23 million at the time, to fund bitcoin development in places like Africa and India.
