This is how much the crypto market grew in 2023: CoinGecko

Crypto market analysis platform CoinGecko has provided a breakdown of industry growth in 2023 amid optimism and anticipation for several events this year, including the recent approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and the upcoming Bitcoin halving .

According to the report, the market experienced significant growth in several areas, including decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), centralized exchanges (CEXs), and decentralized exchanges (DEXs).

Cryptocurrency market capitalization has increased 2.6 times

In 2023, the crypto ecosystem has more than doubled its total market capitalization, increasing by 108% compared to $832 billion at the start of the year. Most of the growth occurred in the fourth quarter as optimism increased about the potential approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, resulting in a 55% increase in market capitalization from $1.1 trillion to over $1.7 trillion -Dollar led.

CoinGecko attributed the increase in market cap to Bitcoin's (BTC) impressive resurgence, as the asset rose from $27,000 to $42,000 in the fourth quarter and posted 155% growth for the year.

“BTC saw a strong increase of +72.4% in the first quarter, followed by another increase in the second quarter. It then declined in the third quarter, falling -11.5% before recovering in the fourth quarter. Likewise, the average trading volume of BTC fell towards the end of the first quarter and gradually declined in the second and third quarters. “It then rose to $18.0 billion in the fourth quarter, up +64.3% quarter-on-quarter,” analysts said.

Other crypto assets such as Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) also recorded impressive gains last year. The former rose 90.5% to close the year at $2,294, while the former rose over 900% to close the year at $103.

CEXs dominated crypto trading volumes

Additionally, the crypto market recorded $36.6 trillion in trading volume in 2023, with the most impressive growth occurring in the fourth quarter, up 53.1% from $6.7 trillion in the third quarter to 10 .3 trillion US dollars. The fourth quarter of 2023 marked the first quarterly growth of the year, driven by excitement around ETFs.

Despite the regulatory hurdles faced by the largest crypto exchange Binance and the implosion of FTX the year before, CEXs dominated trading volumes.

Meanwhile, NFT trading volume fell and ended the year at less than half of the 2022 value. The top 10 chains' volume was $11.8 billion, while last year's was $26.3 billion -dollars lay.
