The Platypus DeFi protocol suffers a $2 million loss due to a series of flash lending attacks

Platypus DeFi has faced repeated breaches this year, suffering losses of over $2 million in the most recent series of attacks.

Platypus, a decentralized finance (DeFi) system, was hit hard by a series of flash loan attacks that resulted in a loss of over $2 million. Following the attack, the protocol quickly froze all of its liquidity pools.

Security experts at CertiK, a blockchain protection company, revealed that the DeFi system was attacked three times. Through these breaches, the thieves successfully stole approximately $2.23 million. On October 12, the burglars stole $1.2 million from Platypus in their first attack. Within hours they returned and stole another $575,000, and just sixty seconds later another $450,000 was stolen.

In context, Platypus acts as an automated market maker system (AMM). This means that it relies on liquidity pools to facilitate automatic trading of digital assets, unlike the typical markets where direct transactions take place between buyers and sellers.

Interestingly, the platform secured funding worth $3.3 million in 2021. This fundraising campaign was particularly supported by Three Arrows Capital, which has since filed for bankruptcy.

To shed more light on the term: In a flash loan attack, cybercriminals manipulate system vulnerabilities. This allows them to secure cryptocurrency loans instantly without the need for any required security.

2023 was not good for Platypus. Earlier this year, on February 16, the system suffered a major blow, losing $8.5 million due to a similar breach. The impact of this incident was severe; This caused the value of the Platypus USD stablecoin (USP) to fall from $1 to a meager $0.47. In July, the protocol was compromised again, albeit on a smaller scale, with losses totaling around $156,999.

As a remedial measure after the devastating breach in February, Platypus launched a portal in March. The purpose of this online area was to assist affected users.

They would be able to log in, find out the amount of compensation they are entitled to and raise any related complaints before receiving a financial refund.
