The old Cobie post shows up almost on time and predicts the Bitcoin ETF run-up scenario

Cobie, a prominent figure in crypto trading circles known for his insightful and often accurate predictions, published a post on August 23, 2023 that described the spot Bitcoin ETF scenario in shocking detail.

Cobie's post, which delved into the intricacies of Bitcoin (BTC) and the expected approval of a Bitcoin ETF, demonstrated his deep understanding of market dynamics.

His prediction of a significant increase in the price of BTC, potentially reaching $50,000 by the end of the year, as well as a detailed analysis of the possible impact of ETF approval, reflect a level of analysis that few in the field can match.

Foresight

The trader also predicted when the SEC would approve the ETFs, saying at the time that until then it was basically “free” to buy Bitcoin and recommending selling as soon as approval arrived or shortly before.

Cobie wrote:

“Anyway, the BTC ETF will definitely be approved, I am 99% confident, but it will be at the latest possible date (i.e. when they can no longer delay but have to make a decision).”

He added that once the ETFs are approved, there would be a “death blow” that would likely drive the price lower due to heavy selling pressure from Grayscale GBTC holders who have been waiting for an opportunity to sell just before, to be whole again.

In hindsight, given the price trend, the best move would have been to follow this advice. This has caused great admiration on crypto Twitter. However, Cobie believes the admiration is inappropriate.

Cobie's thoughtful reaction

In a candid response to the social media uproar, Cobie emphasized the dynamic and often uncertain nature of financial forecasts.

“I can’t even remember, man,” he began, emphasizing the challenge of staying on top of the ever-changing market views. He noted how easy it is to find past predictions that, in hindsight, seem accurate given the frequent changes in opinion and market conditions.

He cautioned against relying too much on isolated predictions, stating:

“The screenshot by itself 'looks cool' but doesn't mean much in reality, you know, it basically leaves out half a year of shit and other factors that contaminate thinking.”

His comments are a humble reminder of the transience of market analysis. Despite his analysis, he said he did not stick to that theory in the months that followed. Cobie added:

“The reality (at least for me) is that three weeks later it's pretty easy for me to discard my own opinions, come up with new ideas that I think contradict them, etc. So it's just a whole mess of doubt and indecision things along the way.”

This perspective resonates greatly in the cryptocurrency community, where rapid change and volatility are the norm. Cobie's reflections on the process of opinion formation and reform in response to new information and market changes illustrate the complex, nonlinear nature of financial forecasting.
