The OG bitcoin developer had all of its BTC holdings stolen

The controversial bitcoin developer has lost all of its bitcoin holdings, according to a series of tweets

Luke Dashjr, one of the early developers in the history of bitcoin, announced on Twitter today that his PGP key was compromised and his bitcoins were stolen. The amount of bitcoins lost is still unknown, but according to Dashjr, a significant portion appears to have been transferred to 1YAR6opJCfDjBNdn5bV8b5Mcu84tv92fa via the CoinJoin mixing service.

The prolific developer expressed his shock and disbelief upon discovering the theft and asked why he couldn’t reach anyone at the FBI or IC3.

Despite being one of the most knowledgeable figures in the cryptocurrency world, Dashjr turned to social media to seek help for what appeared to be an illegal act by an unknown perpetrator. The lack of clarity about how much bitcoin was stolen only complicates Dashjr’s predicament. The developer sank further into despair when it turned out that virtually all of his bitcoins had been taken away.

As there is no central authority managing digital assets, it is up to the individuals themselves to take extra care to protect their holdings from unauthorized access. The fact that the longtime Bitcoin Core developer had his coins was a somber reminder for the cryptocurrency community. “Timely reminder to keep your keys in cold storage and not on an internet-connected device,” noted one Twitter user.

Other users suggested Dashjr is lying. “The Art of the Boat Accident. Respect,” joked another user.
