The Mt. Gox hacker is one of the richest people in the world

Mt. Gox, once the world's leading Bitcoin (BTC) exchange, suffered a catastrophic crash in 2014 after a massive hack resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins.

Notably, the Mt. Gox hacker slowly siphoned around 650,000 BTC from the crypto exchange over three years. Many of these Bitcoins were allegedly laundered on BTC-e, which was founded in July 2011 by Alexander Vinnik and Aleksandr Bilyuchenko. Both were convicted of crimes related to the hack.

Notably, forensic analysis estimates that the Mt. Gox hacker still owns 79,957 BTC, which is currently worth $3.18 billion.

According to Forbes billionaires, the criminal is one of the 1,000 richest people in the world. The Mt. Gox hacker has a net worth comparable to well-known public figures such as legendary basketball player Michael Jordan.

The Mt. Gox hack

In June 2011, hackers attacked Mt. Gox, the leading Bitcoin exchange founded by Jed McCaleb. Interestingly, McCaleb co-founded Ripple and later Stellar (XLM).

Back to the hack: The attacker exploited a vulnerability in the exchange's security system. Using a fake account, he manipulated account balances using the stolen credentials of Auden McKernan, a Mt. Gox auditor.

Essentially, part of the hack involved creating a fake account that displayed Bitcoin for sale. This caused the Bitcoin price to collapse on the stock market. Therefore, Bitcoin changed hands at artificially low prices, as low as one cent per Bitcoin.

The hacker bought the Bitcoin at these deflated prices and later laundered it into BTC-e. In this context, security experts criticized Mt. Gox for weak security protocols. The exchange promised to improve its system and provide compensation to affected users.

In summary, this event is still on the minds of Bitcoin investors and the cryptocurrency market. Investors fear a sell-off by the Mt. Gox hacker and repayment to victims and creditors.
