The balancer of the decentralized financial system was exploited for almost $900,000
Balancer, a decentralized finance system, faced a breach just days after discovering a system glitch that resulted in a loss of almost $900,000.
A security breach occurred in the Balancer decentralized financial system, resulting in a loss of approximately $900,000. This information was published on August 27th on X, a well-known social platform. Interestingly, this follows a prior warning of a bug in the system that was affecting various liquidity pools.
An Ethereum address believed to be linked to the cyber criminal was unearthed by blockchain security specialist Meier Dolev. Following the breach, two significant amounts of the Dai (DAI) stablecoin were inflowed to this particular address. The amounts, $636,807 and $257,520 respectively, added up to a worrying total of just under $893,900.
Balancer’s team reached out to X to confirm the violation. In their message, they said that despite their recent actions to minimize potential threats, the compromised pools are still active and cannot be stopped. They advised their user base to divest themselves of the affected liquidity pools immediately to avoid further losses.
Earlier in the week, on August 22nd, Balancer uncovered a significant flaw affecting its expanded liquidity pools. It urged its user base to divert funds away from the vulnerable liquidity providers, while simultaneously freezing certain pools to contain the potential fallout.
On the day this flaw was discovered, more than $5 million worth of assets were at risk. Two days later, on August 24, $2.8 million in assets were still unsecured. Balancer’s public message to X emphasized the urgency. It clarified that while the funds in the revised mining pools are considered safe, it is imperative that users either switch to safer mining pools or withdraw their investments entirely. They tagged certain pools as “mitigated” while labeling others as “vulnerable.”
Balancer had integrated its protocol into the Optimism network last June. The aim of this integration was to improve the user experience while reducing transaction costs.
