I was wondering about a token concept about this. For example, could one create a token that would be randomly distributed to whoever runs a node and how long they continuously run that node.
For a true blockchain, I think the short answer is no. There isn’t a “Proof of Running a Full Node” concept that would provide an appropriate economic incentive, but maybe someone can think of it. The only problem with rewarding full nodes for running a full account would be verifying that they are actually running a full node. How can the network in general be sure that someone is running a full node without verifying all the data that is the full node? It’s easy to prove work has been done to mine a block (you just check the block hash), it takes no time at all. How much time and bandwidth would it take to verify full nodes? I have to imagine that it will be a lot.
The real benefit of funning a full node is a higher level of security for transaction reliability.
Another note: If a “bandwidth currency/token” emerges in the future, there could be an economic incentive to run a full node, as light nodes would have to re-download the information for specific blocks with specific transactions over and over again.
Just my two cents.
