A small “vertical plant factory” has been opened in downtown Shanghai, allowing city dwellers to have an encounter with nature.
It is part of an exhibition showing the latest agricultural technologies displayed at the 5th China International Import Expo.
The “vertical plant factory” offers a sustainable way to produce more food at a lower cost.
It allows plants to grow under controlled light, temperature, humidity, and other conditions to increase their growth rates up to 3 to 6 times natural conditions. In an area of 2,000 square meters, 3 tons of vegetables can be produced per day. It also significantly reduces lab time for seed experiments.

Additionally, there is a pop-up market selling fresh vegetables.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Shanghai Science and Technology Association, the Ruijin No. 2 Road Subdistrict Office and Bright Seedbase at Ruijin Science Life House, a science popularization venue at 124 Maoming Road S. It is expected to last until the end of the year.
The venue opened in July to promote science by inviting business tycoons to host exhibitions together, with German optical systems and optoelectronics manufacturer ZEISS being the first to collaborate.
