Bitcoiners are guessing whether the transfer was a costly mistake, an attempt to spark a new wave of hype surrounding Bitcoin ETF approval in the US, or a donation from an altruist. At the same time, the identity of the sender is not yet known.

Satoshi Nakamoto's wallet address receives $1.19 million: What is known

Today, in the early hours of the morning, Crypto Twitter began discussing a stunning $1,191,134 transaction someone sent to the wallet containing the 50 BTC block reward for the first Bitcoin block, that was ever mined in 2009 is stored. Most commonly, this old address is referred to as “Satoshi Nakamoto wallet.”

The transaction was approved yesterday, January 5, 2024, around 7pm UTC. It is interesting that the mysterious sender withdrew the entire amount of orange coins (almost 27 BTC) from the Binance exchange (BNB) 50 minutes before transferring them to the Satoshi Nakamoto wallet.

The wallet activity history only shows these two transactions. Since Binance (BNB) has strict KYC procedures, at least the compliance department knows the person who sent almost $1.2 million to Satoshi Nakamoto's wallet.

Typically, transactions to or from Satoshi-era wallets are interpreted as signals of upcoming volatility spikes. As U.Today previously reported, some early Bitcoin (BTC) wallets were activated before the Terra/Luna collapse.

Additionally, some Bitcoin (BTC) holders from the early 2010s managed to sell their stake near the current Bitcoin (BTC) all-time high in November 2021 for a profit of almost 2,300x.

However, numerous “old” wallets were caught processing transactions on normal days without price jumps.

Who is the mysterious Satoshi opponent?

Cryptocurrency enthusiasts on social media are trying to explain this unusual transaction. Three theories are most commonly discussed by Bitcoiners on X.

First, this transaction may be a tribute to the Bitcoin (BTC) inventor: it took place two days after the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin (BTC) mainnet.

Then someone could have accidentally sent this huge sum of money. Furthermore, this could be another attempt to stoke euphoria in anticipation of Bitcoin (BTC) ETF approval by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
