Coinbase Chief Legal Officer (CLO) Paul Grewal has praised the Department of Energy (DoE) for its quick correction in response to the controversy surrounding the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Bitcoin (BTC) mining survey. The EIA recently announced its decision to stop emergency collection of energy consumption data from Bitcoin miners.
Coinbase CLO praises DoE for correcting its mistakes
Citing Senator Cynthia Lummis' comments on the case, Grewal wrote: “It is clear that the Department of Defense has broken the law. It admits its mistake, addresses the harm caused, and commits to making things right in the future. It doesn't intervene to avoid embarrassment. It is not that hard.”
The statement from the Coinbase CLO appears to be indirectly directed at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The reason for this could be his disappointment with the regulator, which, in his opinion, does not accept its alleged wrongdoings and instead harasses crypto industry participants.
Additionally, in his remarks, Grewal praised Senator Cynthia Lummis for her advocacy on the EIA Bitcoin mining survey fiasco. Additionally, Coinbase's CLO emphasized the importance of a sensible regulator admitting mistakes, responding to damages incurred, and committing to future compliance.

EIA Bitcoin Miners Survey Withdrawal
The DoE's withdrawal of the crypto mining usage survey represents a significant victory for the entire crypto community. Additionally, it allays concerns about government overreach and unfair attacks on Bitcoin and the entire crypto industry by the Biden administration. Additionally, the Coinbase CLO’s comments highlight a positive shift toward regulatory transparency and accountability in the crypto space.
The mutual agreement between the parties to the dispute requires the destruction of all information already received by the EIA and the termination of the survey. According to the agreement, the EIA will publish a new Bitcoin survey notice allowing public comments. This step promotes transparency and accountability in the regulatory process.
Additionally, the DoE’s commendation of the Coinbase CLO for its quick correction reflects a growing sentiment within the crypto community for constructive engagement with regulators. However, several crypto stakeholders are still engaged in a legal battle with the SEC that could reshape the regulatory space.
