Michael Saylor's Bitcoin holdings could now be worth over $1 billion

Michael Saylor is a Bitcoin Billionaire – if He really is the Diamond Hands he claims to be.

In 2020 the Bitcoin bull was claims To personal own 17,732 BTC. The chairman and co-founder of the technology company MicroStrategy writes on Twitter said that he had snapped up the massive amount of digital coins for $175.2 million.

Today, the same investment would be worth over $1.1 billion.

It's possible that the tech entrepreneur sold some of his private stash. But it's more likely that it was bought more– which would cement his status as a giant whale.

MicroStrategy added BTC to its balance sheet in August 2020 to generate better returns for the company's shareholders and combat inflation. Since his company launched its Bitcoin investment strategy, Saylor has traveled the world preaching “digital gold” as the superior investment.

“I famously said, ‘I’m going to buy that top forever,’” says Saylor said just last month. MicroStrategy, which sells data analysis software, then a week later issued $155.4 million for more coins.

Since then, the company has continued to purchase the asset and now owns 193,000 BTC – or more than $12 billion – in virtual coins.

So far, so good: MicroStrategy stock (MSTR on the Nasdaq), known as one of the largest institutional holders of Bitcoin, is up over 600% since it was first purchased. Saylor has argued that investors can buy MSTR stock as a safe way to gain exposure to Bitcoin.

He has also repeatedly emphasized that personally owning Bitcoin is the best way to protect his wealth.

“The ability to move money from one city to another, from one state to a state, from one country to a country and from one counterparty to another counterparty – all of these things are extremely valuable, certainly vital and deadly. “In many cases – and that's what Bitcoin gives you that you can't get with anything else,” he said said on the Patrick Bet-David Podcast last year.

How much of a Bitcoin whale is he today? This is still unclear. He hasn't posted an update on his personal BTC stash recently, and MicroStrategy's press office and Saylor did not immediately respond to Decrypt's request for comment.
