Miami Mayor Francis Suarez will take his salary in Bitcoin if he is elected president

Republican presidential candidate and current Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has stated that if elected president, he would be willing to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as part of his salary.

Suarez made this statement in a podcast interview, in which he confirmed that he had already paid part of his mayoral salary in bitcoin and would continue to do so if he were elected president.

He added that he believes it is important to support cryptocurrencies in general and bitcoin in particular as he sees them as a way to ensure freedom is always there.

Suarez described bitcoin and other forms of cryptocurrency as “a good hedge and a good control and balancing mechanism for a monetary system that has gotten completely out of control and very political.”

The Mayor of Miami also spoke about the benefits of blockchain and fractional investing. He said tokenization is making it easier for more people to get into debt and stock investing. By taking direct stakes in fragmented assets, people may be able to fill the wealth gap and make more money with less risk.

Bitcoin and Presidents

Crypto has become a hot topic among US presidential candidates. Incumbent Joe Biden and his closest rival, former President Donald Trump, each said they had no fundamental value and were “a disaster just waiting to happen.”

However, Suarez said earlier this month that he would accept Bitcoin as a campaign donation, joining a line of other presidential candidates who have also accepted cryptocurrencies, including Robert Kennedy Jr., Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy tweeted in mid-May, “Bitcoin should not be regulated as a security.” He also said at the 2023 Bitcoin Conference that he would be taking bitcoin payments for his campaign.

Similarly, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has a slim chance of becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, has also shown his support for cryptocurrencies.

Florida Gov. Ron Desantis, whom many see as Trump’s closest contender for the Republican party, has been vocal in his support of Bitcoin. He launched his campaign on Twitter (now known as X) by stating that Americans have “every right to use Bitcoin”.

Desantis also took a stand against lawmakers and regulators, accusing them of not engaging with crypto laws and making it harder for Americans to own and use them.

But despite DeSantis’ public stance on Bitcoin, Mayor Suarez claimed that all he heard from his opponent was that he was opposed to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

He added that DeSantis needs to do more than just stand up against CBDCs. “You can’t just say central bank digital currencies are bad,” he said. “No one disagrees with that. It’s a simple place.”
