Maya app surprises Filipino users with free bitcoin giveaways
The all-in-one money app has a crypto feature that allows users to buy, sell, and hold digital currencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) for as little as P1.
It appears that Maya (formerly PayMaya), a payments app based in the Philippines, has been giving away bitcoin (BTC) to its users for the past few days. Netizens became curious after a series of billboards surfaced across the country instructing certain users to check their crypto wallets, while some app users have reportedly confirmed they received free bitcoin giveaways.
The billboards have piqued the curiosity of many netizens, especially as the billboards are prompting Maya app users by name and instructing them to check their crypto wallets, the Manila Bulletin reported. The all-in-one money app has a crypto feature that allows users to buy, sell, and hold digital currencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) for as little as P1.
The Maya app was previously known as PayMaya and is operated by Maya Bank, allowing it to offer e-wallets and digital banking services such as savings and lending products. Maya has kept up with developments in the fintech space and now holds a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license issued by the Central Bank of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
While some netizens are just curious about the hype surrounding the paid Bitcoin giveaways, some actually confirmed that they received the free crypto themselves. “I just checked my Mayan wallet and why do I have free BTC??? What a giveaway is this!!!” a user named Jayvee posted on Twitter on Aug. 17.
Another user named Veronica also confirmed receiving BTC but also asked how the crypto could be used. “Yes, I think Maya is really giving bitcoin for free now. I received some too, but how can I use them?” said the user (translated from Pilipino).
While most Maya users probably didn’t get free crypto, they shouldn’t worry too much about it. Based on screenshots of the transaction shared by Jayvee, Maya is only giving away small amounts of the crypto.
For example, Jaycee received 0.000007203 BTC in a transaction valued at P9.98, or just about 20 cents. The second transaction is even smaller at 0.000002537 and has a value of P3.50.
Just to be sure, Maya users should now check their crypto wallets in case they received free crypto without receiving any notification. According to Rappler, it’s a good idea to update the Maya app to the latest version.
