James Howells, a computer engineer who claims he accidentally discarded a hard drive containing about 7,500 to 8,000 bitcoin (BTC) while cleaning his house in 2013, has pledged to use 10% of that lost stash if/when recovered and according to Newport, United Kingdom, is being turned into a cryptocurrency hub.
The latest ` report claims that the amount of BTC lost is 8,000. A number of previous claims reportedly put that figure at $7,500.
At the current price of $22,715 per coin, Howells’ lost 8,000 BTC is worth around $181.7 million. The stash was worth nearly half a billion dollars during Bitcoin’s peak in mid-April last year.
In the event of recovery, the computer engineer plans to return 10% of his stash, or 800 BTC (18.17M), according to the `. He said his donation would be used to promote the use and understanding of cryptocurrency.
“One of the things we want to do on the actual landfill, once we’ve cleaned it up and reclaimed the land, is put up a power generation facility, maybe some wind turbines,” Howells said. “We would like to set up a community owned (bitcoin) mining facility that uses this clean electricity to produce bitcoin for the people of Newport.”
Howells also said he plans to give every citizen of Newport 50 EUR ($51) worth of BTC and install crypto-based terminals in all stores.
Newport City Council, which owns the landfill where the drive is said to be buried, has repeatedly denied Howells access to dig the site, citing environmental and access concerns.
However, Howells has claimed he secured funding for the operation and also put together a team of professionals to handle the task at a “very high level”.
“Digging a landfill is a huge operation in itself,” he said. “Funding is secured. We brought an AI specialist on board. Their technology can easily be retrained to look for a hard drive.”
He added that they also have an environmental team on board, and described the whole group as “a well-rounded team of different experts with different areas of expertise who, when we all come together, are able to perform this task at a very high level.” “
According to the report, the 37-year-old signed ownership of some of the coins as part of the funding process.
As reported back in January last year, the Wales-based IT expert pledged to donate 25% of his lost bitcoins to a “COVID-19 relief fund” in Newport if the council grants him access to the site to look for the hard drive to search.
