LeetSwap trading is being suspended over security breach concerns, leading to a potential $630,000 exploit investigation
LeetSwap halts trading to investigate a potential $630,000 exploit in its liquidity pools and hires security researchers to unravel the details of the breach.
LeetSwap, a well-known decentralized exchange operating on Coinbase’s Base network, has been hit with potential security threats. On Aug. 1, the exchange posted a worrying message on Twitter, expressing concerns that the safety of some liquidity pools could be compromised.
After an initial investigation, LeetSwap decided to temporarily halt trading to further investigate the possible compromise. They hired on-chain security experts to uncover the facts and possibly restore locked liquidity. Details were still sparse, but the crypto community, including several blockchain security firms, jumped in to analyze what happened.
The head of research at algorithmic market maker Wintermute, Igor Igamberdiev, provided an insightful observation. He believed the attacker had found a vulnerability in a disclosed smart contract feature. By exploiting this feature, the perpetrator was able to manipulate the price of a specific token, which then opened a way to derive packaged Ether (ETH) from LeetSwap’s liquidity pools. It amounted to 342.5 ETH or $630,000.
Igamberdiev’s theory caught on, and leading blockchain security companies like PeckShield, Beosin, BlockSec, and CertiK concurred with his findings. They all publicly confirmed the theory and the amount of money linked to the exploit.
LeetSwap announced its collaboration with security experts in a subsequent update about 90 minutes after the trading halt was announced. The main focus is to find a way to regain the liquidity at risk.
That incident wasn’t the only controversy surrounding the base that day. In another case, the developer of a Brian Armstrong-themed memecoin called BALD allegedly drained liquidity from the token, causing a sudden price drop. Despite allegations of exit fraud, the project developer firmly denied any wrongdoing.
LeetSwap’s episode is a stark reminder of the challenges and vulnerabilities that still exist in the decentralized exchange environment. As the industry continues to grow, security remains of paramount importance. Events like these underscore the importance of continued vigilance and evolution of defense mechanisms.
