On-chain experts estimate losses at a staggering $47 million, with the malicious attack specifically targeting the liquidity of Kyber Swap's elastic pools, resulting in significant stress on the platform's LP pools.

Cryptic Heist Details: What Really Happened?

On-chain investigator Spreek first sounded the alarm on crypto Twitter and pointed out suspicious transactions. The severity of the breach becomes clear when looking at the networks that were attacked. The Arbitrum network experienced the worst attack with a theft of $20 million, followed by $15 million on Optimism, $7.5 million on Ethereum Mainnet, $2 million on Polygon, and $315,000. Surprisingly, all embezzled funds can be traced back to a single address: 0xc9b826bad20872eb29f9b1d8af4befe8460b50c6. What is noteworthy is that this breach was not caused by a technical error, but rather had a direct impact on the total value locked in the Kyber pools.

Kyber Network responds quickly

The Kyber Network has issued an urgent notice confirming the exploit. They have advised users to withdraw their funds from the exchange to avoid further losses. The team also warned about phishing links and unsolicited direct messages. The KyberSwap aggregator remains unaffected and is fully functional.

Hacker doesn't give in

In a bizarre twist, the hacker left an on-chain message for KyberSwap's developers, employees, DAO members and LPs, suggesting that negotiations would begin after a break. The letter ended with a mocking inquiry about Ontario's weather.

A dark November for crypto

Following the attack, the Kyber network decentralized exchange reported a total value locked of $17.85 million, a significant decrease from about $80 million before the attack, according to DeFiLlama. The network’s token price also fell from $0.8 to $0.7.
