Kroll Cybersecurity Breach Leaked Sensitive Data – Report

It appears that a data breach involving FTX bankruptcy broker Kroll has resulted in the loss of sensitive information, contrary to previous reports.

In an alleged Q&A summary by Kroll, released August 30, FTX users’ email addresses, mailing addresses, bank account numbers, unique bankruptcy identifiers, account balances, phone numbers, and other claim details were stolen in a cybersecurity incident that FTX suffered on August 30 Revealed to have been breached August 24. Previously, FTX wrote that Kroll “experienced a cybersecurity incident that compromised non-sensitive customer data of certain plaintiffs in the pending bankruptcy proceedings.”

Immediately after the incident, FTX said the account passwords were not maintained by Kroll and that the company’s own systems and digital assets were not affected. A day later, the insolvent exchange announced that it would temporarily freeze the accounts of the affected customers in the claims portal.

According to the report, Kroll has since “contained and remedied” the incident. However, it warned that users should remain “highly vigilant” when it comes to “scams and scams” that appear legitimate about the stolen data. Shortly after the breach, several users began reporting phishing emails disguised as emails from Kroll.

New rounds of phishing attacks targeting the poor FTX, BlockFi and Genesis users are already underway due to the Kroll data leak, which appears to have been caused by an employee SIM swap.‍♂️

At the time of filing for bankruptcy last November, FTX had over 1 million users. On November 12, 2022, just one day after the bankruptcy announcement, FTX was hacked for nearly $400 million in an alleged inside job, sparking an investigation by the US Department of Justice. The insolvency proceedings have come under criticism because of their length and costs. Over $32.5 million was spent on legal fees in February alone.

Cointelegraph contacted Kroll for comments, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
