Jamie Dimon, best known for his criticism of Bitcoin, expressed concerns about its connection to illegal activities while recognizing the right of individuals to invest in cryptocurrencies.
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon now appears ready to support the right of individuals to purchase Bitcoin (BTC) after years of sustained criticism.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Dimon highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding cryptocurrencies' involvement in illegal activities such as fraud and terrorism. Despite these concerns, he emphasized his willingness to defend the right of individuals to purchase cryptocurrencies, although he appears personally hesitant to do so.
“I don’t know what the Bitcoin itself is for, but I defend your right to smoke a cigarette and I defend your right to buy a Bitcoin. Personally, I will never buy a Bitcoin.”

This is Dimon's second public discussion of Bitcoin this year, following his previous statement in January in which he said he was done talking about crypto:
“This is the last time I’ll talk about it [Bitcoin] with CNBC, so help me God.”

However, his recent comments appear to contradict previous statements, such as his claim in December 2023 that he would shut down Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies if he represented the American people. This statement came during a congressional hearing in response to concerns raised about cryptocurrency regulation and compliance by Senator Elizabeth Warren, a vocal cryptocurrency critic. However, as Chainalysis previously clarified, less than 1% of crypto transactions actually involve illegal activity.
According to data from Yahoo Finance, Bitcoin is trading at $72,110 at the time of reporting, up over 70% year-to-date.
