The Curve protocol recently faced two major challenges: a bug crisis and a CRV liquidity crisis. Journalist Wu Blockchain has published a blog about whether the crisis is over.
The bug crisis was created by a vulnerability in certain versions of the Vyper language that caused re-entry protection to fail and subsequently theft of funds from multiple liquidity pools. In response, the Curve team disabled the deposit and staking features for the affected pools, removed them from the interface, and scheduled the creation of new, more secure pools. This action effectively solved the bug crisis, provided there are no unknown bugs in the new Vyper version.
The hackers exploited a bug in some versions of Vyper Compilers to drain funds from four pools on Curve Finance, including the largest. The exploit has raised concerns about the security of DeFi protocols and the broader crypto space. The hack caused Curve Finance to lose millions of dollars.
Trading in the Curve Finance token has been temporarily halted. However, Curve Finance founder Michael Egorov has set up a new liquidity pool on his stablecoin-focused decentralized exchange to deal with the FRAX debt situation and buy time for user repayments. It is worth noting that part of the funds were stolen from the hacker for ethical reasons, preempting his malicious transaction. Still, the hack destabilized Curve Finance’s trading markets and put $100 million worth of cryptocurrencies at risk.

On the other hand, the CRV liquidity crisis was primarily due to Curve founder Michael Egorov’s significant collateralization of the CRV for borrowing on lending platforms Frax Finance and Aave. Despite a brief dip in CRV’s on-chain price following the error incident, the price has since stabilized at around $0.5. Egorov managed to alleviate the crisis by trading CRV OTC to pay off debt, selling a total of 54.5 million CRV tokens and raising $21.8 million.
Although Curve was not directly responsible for the crises, these events underscored the need for lending platforms to implement robust mechanisms for user funds safety and efficient liquidation. This is a valuable lesson for the industry.
