The cryptocurrency market recently experienced a significant downturn, with Bitcoin leading the decline.

Fred Krueger, a well-known figure in the investment industry, used X to analyze the cause of this sudden crash and put forward a complicated theory.

Did the big bet backfire?

According to Krueger, a large fund pursued a risky trading strategy in which it shorted MicroStrategy shares (MSTR) while simultaneously buying Bitcoin (BTC), allocating a staggering $1 billion to each side of the trade.

His strategy backfired last Friday when the fund was forced to exit, resulting in the sale of $1 billion worth of Bitcoin.

This massive selloff reportedly sparked further liquidations in the market, compounded by sales from smaller investors, colloquially referred to as “shrimp, crab and fish.”

As reported by U.Today, MicroStrategy, a Virginia-based business software company known for its significant Bitcoin holdings, has surprisingly surpassed Amazon in trading volume.

This rise was part of a broader trend of increasing enthusiasm in the capitalized Bitcoin complex, which now has a daily trading volume of over $20 billion.

Skepticism and the Current State of Bitcoin

Krueger's analysis sheds light on a possible trigger for Bitcoin's recent crash, but not everyone in the crypto community is convinced.

A post by Josh Olszewicz, a prominent analyst and former head of research at Valkyrie Investments, questioned the viability of the trading strategy outlined by Krueger. He suggested that such a trade would likely have failed before last Friday's events.

Amid this debate, Bitcoin price has shown little resilience and is currently trading just above the $66,000 mark.

Earlier this week, the flagship coin rose to a new all-time high of $73,000.
