Google searches for “Bitcoin halving” reach more than 4/20

Google searches for the term “Bitcoin halving” have reached an all-time high, surpassing the previous record set during the last halving in May 2020. According to Google Trends data, which uses a 100-point scale to determine the relative popularity of key phrases, interest in the Bitcoin network halving is greater than ever.

Interest in the term has steadily increased since the start of 2024, as has search interest in the phrase “Bitcoin” (which is still below its 2017 peak in terms of search interest). The surge in interest this month is notable considering that Bitcoin's (BTC) recent rally has stalled, including this week's turbulence that saw the price fall from a high of around $70,000. Dollar fell last Friday to $63,000 today.

Less than 60 blocks away, the fourth Bitcoin halving will see the number of Bitcoins paid out as block rewards to miners halved from the current 6.25 BTC to 3,125 BTC. This particular halving is notable for several reasons, including the resurgent interest in Bitcoin as a developer ecosystem, the shift in the U.S. mining industry following China's ban, and the relatively recent launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs, which have helped create a (now flagging ) to stimulate market rally.

“This is the first halving where major U.S. asset managers are educating about Bitcoin, and there is no better Bitcoin education than educating about the halving.” It is, first of all, a narrative event – a market moment that occurs every four years – and then a supply event, although I think both aspects will have an impact,” Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, told CoinDesk via email.

However, it's not just fund managers who have fun. As Decrypt originally reported, search frequency for “Bitcoin halving” surpassed cannabis culture meme number “420” for the first time in its history. This is particularly notable as the halving was originally scheduled for April 20, known for its cannabis celebrations, but is now expected to take place on Friday evening.
