German police confiscate Bitcoin (BTC) worth $2.1 billion

According to a police statement, police in Germany have tentatively seized 50,000 Bitcoin (BTC) worth $2.17 billion, calling the operation the largest cryptocurrency seizure ever.

The lawsuit is related to the operation in 2013 of a piracy website that violated copyright law. The proceeds from this venture were then converted into Bitcoin. One of the two suspects voluntarily transferred the Bitcoin to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the statement said.

An investigation into later commercial money laundering is ongoing, but there are no official charges against the men.

“A final decision about the use of the Bitcoins has not yet been made,” the police statement continues.

In 2023, the US government seized $216 million worth of Bitcoins linked to Silk Road, a dark net market that was shut down in 2013. According to Arkham, the US government now has $9.5 billion worth of Bitcoin.
