In the ever-evolving field of financial technology, innovation remains the driving force behind the tremendous changes in the way we manage, invest and use our financial resources. As we chart the path in 2023 and slowly approaching the first half of 2024, VCs are at the forefront of this narrative, where the convergence of finance and technology is leading to many novel solutions transforming the financial sector.
The fintech landscape, once characterized by exciting start-ups and groundbreaking concepts, is now maturing into a linchpin of the global economy. For this article, The Recursive reached out to several VCs to get their thoughts on the upcoming fintech trends that will disrupt the industry in the time to come.
DeFi, APIs and AI-powered risk management
The advent of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has captured the imagination of investors, opening up new opportunities for lending, revenue generation and financial innovation. As Uni.Fund’s Dora Trachana points out, DeFi represents a radical shift in the way traditional financial services are accessed and consumed.
With platforms like lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and yield farming, DeFi is not only changing the lending landscape but also offering individuals the opportunity to participate in previously exclusive markets.
“The development of decentralized finance (DeFi) is catching our attention and offering new opportunities for lending and revenue generation. Exploring central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and integrating financial services into non-financial products via APIs are intriguing trends,” Trachana tells The Recursive.
APIs bridge the gap between financial and non-financial products – revolutionizing the way we experience transactions. Add to this the potential of AI-enabled risk management as a notable focus for venture capitalists. As Trachana suggests, connecting AI and finance promises improved risk assessment and fraud detection.
“Personally, I am excited about the potential of AI-powered risk management and the emergence of sustainable financial solutions. As we navigate this dynamic environment, I am confident that innovative startups that address these trends will shape the future of finance,” she emphasizes.
Unlimited payments and synergies in the gig economy
According to Veronica Korzh of SID Venture Partners, integrating gig economy dynamics and borderless payment solutions is a cornerstone of fintech development.
Digital currencies and blockchain technology are poised to revolutionize cross-border transactions and enable individuals to take advantage of global opportunities without geographic restrictions.
“It enables people to be agile, find opportunities globally without being tied to one place, and overcome challenges. Take a look at CBDCs that are on the rise around the world. China has already launched its CBDC with more than 260 million users, and European representatives are likely to be next – the UK and Sweden are nearing completion of the CBDC this year,” explains Korzh.
Data exchange for more security
The fight against cyber threats and financial fraud has sparked a new trend in data sharing between financial institutions. This approach allows banks to quickly respond to new threats, as emphasized by investment analyst Nazar Halychanskyi from Kiev-based VC Flyer One Ventures.
As the cost of complying with financial crimes reaches staggering numbers, data sharing can be instrumental in minimizing fraud and strengthening the financial ecosystem.
“It’s a big problem. In 2021, the total cost of financial crime compliance for financial institutions worldwide was US$274 billion, up from US$214 billion in 2020. From 2024, the UK will require banks to charge customers who are victims of APP Fraud will fully compensate. I can imagine that banks will strive to minimize fraud as much as possible,” says Halychanskyi.
Tokenization and crypto-traditional finance convergence
Tokenization allows financial institutions to offer crypto-backed products and services, providing a much-needed link between traditional finance and the crypto ecosystem. Given the continued growth of DeFi, this trend underscores the transformation of financial systems towards a more decentralized model, investors point out.
Additionally, there will be trends in the crypto space for the foreseeable future ranging from blockchain development and institutional adoption to regulatory coordination—all a reflection of ongoing innovation.
“There are expected to be significant advances in technologies over the coming months and years, particularly in energy efficient blockchain networks. The trend towards proof-of-stake consensus mechanisms and Layer 2 solutions is likely to accelerate, addressing concerns related to energy consumption,” said Mykhailo Romanenko, investment activities expert and co-founder of global crypto exchange Kyrrex.
The crypto space is no stranger to regulatory scrutiny, but as Romanenko says, governments are moving toward clearer policies. Legal challenges and disputes are expected to drive the creation of legal precedents in the crypto space.
To encourage wider adoption, educational resources and user-friendly interfaces will play a crucial role in demystifying cryptocurrencies and attracting investment from both individual and institutional players.
“User-friendly interfaces, simplified explanations, and enhanced educational resources are likely to lead to broader adoption by individuals and businesses. Such actions could attract further investment and participation from both retail clients and institutional actors. These could include advances in zero-knowledge proofs, secure multi-party computation, and improved wallet security protocols,” concludes Romanenko.
