Ethereum Layer 2 Network Optimism Sees Surge in Transaction Activity Here’s why it matters

Crypto traders and investors are increasingly seeing the optimism ecosystem as a likely place to find returns along the lines of the 100+ multiples sometimes seen in previous bull market cycles.

Transaction activity has steadily bumped into the scaling climber over the past few weeks, outpacing competitor Arbitrum’s activity, which is down nearly 50% since peaking in November.

Such activity can serve as a predictive indicator of upcoming investor interest in any blockchain ecosystem, as it suggests optimism for buyers of the underlying tokens and users of decentralized applications (dApps) built on top of that network.

The Ethereum-based scaling product, which allows traders to transact on the blockchain network for less than pennies in fees and transaction times of mere seconds, is among a spate of blockchain networks launched over the past year – each promising to be faster and cheaper than its predecessor.

But on-chain data shows that optimism isn’t just hype. Last week, the ecosystem logged over 800,000 transactions in a single day, a number that was almost double network activity in November and more than 10 times since last June.

Optimism’s total value (TVL) is just under $600 million, with popular trading protocol Synthetix accounting for 18% of that total TVL. Synthetix allows traders to trade financial derivatives without having to rely on third-party trading and clearing systems – making it a niche market for users looking to invest in global assets – like stocks – at low fees.

Several yield platforms on Optimism are offering annualized rewards as high as 100% on some liquidity pools, data from DeFiLlama shows, further attracting investor capital.

Optimism’s native OP tokens are down 3.5% over the past 24 hours, pulling back after a 40% run over the past week, data from CoinGecko shows.
