Ethereum gains ground against Bitcoin as bear market continues

  • Ethereum has recently gained around 300% against Bitcoin.
  • Despite the gains, BTC is trending higher than ETH year-to-date.

Bitcoin [BTC] and Ethereum [ETH] continue to be the leading digital assets. This fact became evident when traditional financial institutions applied for ETFs on these two assets. Still, their price trends show clear differences in the current market, with ETH appearing to be performing more favorably.

Ethereum versus Bitcoin

The ongoing bear market continues, causing Bitcoin and Ethereum to fall in value due to a series of events in the cryptocurrency space.

As highlighted in a recent Ecoinmetrics post, Ethereum lost ground against Bitcoin during the previous bear market, erasing its earlier gains. This divergence led to reduced correlation between these two tokens.

However, ETH’s price action seems more favorable in the current bear market. According to the same Ecoinmetrics post, it has gained about 300% against BTC. Still, upon closer examination of the ETH/BTC correlation, a clear pattern has emerged.

Bitcoin has seen further gains since the beginning of the year

Examining the price action of Ethereum and Bitcoin found that despite Ethereum’s impressive year-to-date (YTD) surge of over 300%, Bitcoin posted stronger gains.

A visual representation of an Into the Block chart showed that Ethereum started the year with stronger momentum compared to Bitcoin.

Still, Bitcoin managed to close the gap and maintain an uptrend. As of this writing, Bitcoin is up about 77%, while Ethereum is up about 54% based on current prices.

At the time of writing, it was trading at around $29,700, a marginal price increase of less than 1%.

Also, bitcoin has had ups and downs throughout the year, but the price range tool showed that it had grown over 70% up to that point. This trajectory coincided with the observed price trend on the Into the Block chart.
