Ethereum sets window for withdrawals as Shanghai upgrade takes shape
The Surge will have to wait.
Ethereum developers are prioritizing beacon chain withdrawals for the network’s next major upgrade, Shanghai, and delaying implementation of The Surge, the network’s continuation of The Merge, according to the Ethereum Consensus Layer’s recent call. This is the first time developers have provided a set window for withdrawals.
The move is important as The Surge, which should become part of Shanghai, aims to help Ethereum process financial transactions faster by changing the way the blockchain manages its workload.
Shanghai upgrade
However, during the Dec. 1 conference call, Ethereum developers agreed to prioritize allowing Ethereum stakers to withdraw their ETH with the Shanghai upgrade. As a result, EIP-4844 is now expected to enable proto-thanksharding in a separate update expected to go live after Shanghai.
Shanghai is expected to go live in the second half of 2023.

The meeting followed Ethereum’s All Core Developers Call last month, which first discussed prioritizing ETH staked withdrawals over proto-thanksharding. The Ethereum Foundation JavaScript team said it will soon restart the Shandong testnet with payouts enabled.
Ethereum’s highly anticipated chain merge went live in November, unifying Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus layer with the network’s mainnet execution layer. The upgrade switched Ethereum to PoS and booted proof-of-work miners from the network.
standby
Despite the successful upgrade, Ethereum developers have been criticized for not yet allowing Ethereum stakers to withdraw their staked ETH.
“Consensus layer teams…believe EIP-4844 is nowhere near the same readiness as [staked ETH] withdrawals, and their pairing would significantly delay withdrawals,” said Danny Ryan of the Ethereum Foundation, who led the Dec. 1 call. “We will not pair them. We will continue to work flat out on Capella in its current form.”
Capella is the name of the closed testnet on which Ethereum’s core developers are testing the tiered ether payout feature.

Proto-thanksharding, also called The Surge, is expected to significantly improve network performance and reduce transaction fees by paving the way for a 100x improvement in Layer 2 rollup scalability.
Once implemented, EIP-4844 allows Layer 2 validators to download only a small portion of each block produced by the network. Validators can also purge historical data older than 30 days, reducing the computational hurdles on the way to becoming a validator. The upgrades are expected to result in an approximately 100x increase in L2 block size and transaction throughput.
Proto-thanksharding is also the first of Ethereum’s two-part process implementing full sharding, which splits Ethereum’s workload into small chains that work in tandem.
