Ethereum and Solana record big gains following Bitcoin uptrend

A wave of optimism has swept the crypto market, driven by significant price increases in industry heavyweights Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL).

Solana has exceeded expectations with a strong price rally, securing the fourth spot in the cryptocurrency rankings by market capitalization and overtaking Binance's BNB token. While a major network outage on February 6 could have spooked some paper traders, market sentiment was optimistic enough to counter fears.

The price of Solana increased by 4% today from $112.54 to currently $117.14. Things are looking good for swing traders too, with the cryptocurrency posting an impressive 15.9% rise in the last 7 days.

There appears to be growing risk appetite in the markets as the widely followed Crypto Fear and Greed Index hit 74 out of 100, the highest reading since Bitcoin's record high in November 2021.

Bitcoin is usually viewed as a volatile alternative to stocks, but altcoins are even more volatile than BTC and are highly sought after during bullish times as they have the potential to produce large gains in short periods of time.

Beyond overall market sentiment, Total Value Locked (TVL) in Solana's DeFi protocols has seen a meteoric rise of over 944% since 2023, according to DefiLlama, reflecting increased investor confidence and commitment to the Solana ecosystem. The solid growth comes despite the blow that accompanied FTX's collapse.

Sam Bankman Fried, the former CEO of the defunct exchange, was a big fan and investor of the token.

On a side note, pre-orders for the new version of the Solana Mobile Saga smartphone have exceeded expectations. They achieved over 100,000 pre-sales, giving the Solana Foundation enough room to increase its price and benefit from the brand marketing that came with a crypto phone during a symbolic bull run.

Ethereum maintains its momentum

Following broader market moves, Ethereum continues its rise. ETH has posted impressive gains today and has shown notable strength throughout the market rally.

Ethereum price rose 5.6% after a small red candle yesterday. ETH started the day at $2,642 and rose to the current price of $2,781.

The price of Ethereum has not reached such levels since April 2022.

Bitcoin’s price movements have significant traction on altcoins, including Ethereum. However, on a more fundamental level, the highly anticipated Dencun upgrade of the Ethereum network, scheduled for March, promises significant efficiency improvements and has fostered positive sentiment among investors and the crypto community.
