El Salvador moves $386 million worth of Bitcoin into cold storage

El Salvador has transferred a significant portion of its Bitcoin (BTC) assets to a secure cold wallet, President Nayib Bukele has announced.

The Central American country, led by newly re-elected President Nayib Bukele, announced its significant Bitcoin holdings, totaling 5,689.68 BTC and currently valued at over $386 million.

This move to an offline vault within the country’s borders marks, in the words of President Bukele, the creation of the country’s first official “Bitcoin piggy bank.”

We have decided to transfer a large part of our #Bitcoin to a cold wallet and store this cold wallet in a physical vault on our national territory.

You can call it our first #Bitcoin piggy bank 🇸🇻

The move not only highlights El Salvador's commitment to using cryptocurrencies for economic growth, but also addresses security concerns by protecting against potential cyberattacks.

Since adopting Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021, El Salvador has been on a quest to revolutionize its economy, despite skepticism from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

By bringing cryptocurrency into the mainstream, the country wanted to reduce foreign transfer fees and make it possible for the unbanked to have a bank account, a major concern given that 70% of Salvadorans live outside the traditional financial system.

The move to a cold wallet comes as part of ongoing efforts to generate revenue from Bitcoin, as evidenced by significant profits from mining and the Bitcoin-backed Freedom Visa passport program, President Bukele said in a recent social media exchange with the crypto influencer Crypto Rover highlighted.

Despite ambitious crypto initiatives and the recent rise in Bitcoin's value, skepticism remains among the Salvadoran population regarding the volatility and ease of use of the digital currency in a predominantly cash-based society.

But it's not just about financial gain. El Salvador's grand vision extends to creating a technology hub that attracts global talent, further supported by recent legislative changes and strategic meetings with potential government investors.

El Salvador's actions, such as eliminating income tax on international investments and money transfers and its Bitcoin-based passport program, are helping the country carve out a niche as a place for global crypto innovation and investment.

When BTC hit a new all-time high of over $73,000 on March 14, El Salvador's holdings would have been worth more than $415 million. The coin is currently just above $68,000, down slightly by 0.8% from the last 24 hours, but still more than 30% higher than 30 days ago.
