Decentralized crypto exchange Uniswap is considering a proposal to enrich token holders

Community members of decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap are considering a proposal to introduce fees to many of their liquidity pools. This is the latest development in a long-running debate over Uniswap's protocol fees and broader finances.

By introducing fees for the pools, the Uniswap protocol could replenish its coffers and provide rewards to holders of the protocol's native token Uniswap (UNI). Uniswap's decision to further monetize its platform by introducing fees on a large portion of its version three (v3) liquidity pools and all of its version two (v2) pools could also set a precedent for the major DeFi ecosystem, which Uniswap also belongs to, has captured around 70% market share.

“If Uniswap can monetize and bring in all of these dollars by building a really great open source protocol that will be used, then that will encourage other people to do the same,” said Getty Hill, the author of the proposal, told CoinDesk. “I hope this changes some of those industry norms.”

Uniswap v2 has a total value of nearly $1.2 billion and recorded an average daily volume of around $367 million on Ethereum over the past week, data from DefiLlama shows. Uniswap v3, which is used on SushiSwap, Curve, Balance and PancakeSwap, among others, now has a total value of around $2.9 billion.

The mechanism by which the protocol would charge these fees, where these fees would go, and what kind of initiatives the tokens would fund are up for debate, Hill said. Users will clarify these details in community-based discussions before the proposal is officially voted on.

This is not the first time community members have called to enable fee changes for Uniswap liquidity pools. Last summer, a proposal to charge fees caused controversy within the Uniswap community. Ultimately, the proposal failed to gain enough traction, with opponents expressing fears that the move could have broader tax implications for the protocol and its users.
