Cryptos fall; Coincheck looks at the USA

Bitcoin continued to fall on Friday.

Investing.com – Cryptocurrencies fell on Friday, with Bitcoin nearing a two-month low.

Bitcoin was trading at $8,122.00 at 8:58 a.m. ET (12:58 GMT) on the Bitfinex exchange, down 2.03%.

Other digital coins fell, with Ethereum, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, falling 2.33% to $681.53 on the Bitfinex exchange. Ripple, the third-largest virtual currency, fell 2.98% to $0.66897, while Litecoin was trading at $132.64, down 4.01%.

According to Bloomberg news, Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck is planning to expand into the United States.

Coincheck was at the center of a $532 million hack attack in January and was subsequently purchased by financial services firm Monex in April. Monex CEO Oki Matsumoto said he expects an official license from Japan next month but is already considering expansion into the US and Europe.

“Japan seems to be a step ahead in crypto, but in terms of deciding what is a security or a token and attracting institutional investors, the US and Europe are on the rise,” he told Bloomberg

In regulatory news, the Central Bank of Libya has banned the use of virtual currencies and those who use them cannot be protected by Libyan law.

Meanwhile, Switzerland is considering a government-backed digital currency. The government has asked lawmakers to commission a study on the Swiss “e-franc”. While the news is promising for cryptocurrency advocates, the study still faces legislative hurdles from the lower house of parliament. However, the country has been open to digital currencies and was one of the first countries to adopt an initial coin offering (ICO) policy.
