According to Morocco World News, a French man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for using Bitcoin to buy a luxury car and giving a fake check to another luxury watch seller. In particular, the plaintiffs accused the defendants of having cheated them.
The Casablanca Court of Appeal ruled that 21-year-old Frenchman Thomas Clausi would spend 18 months in prison and compensate the victims.
In particular, the accused had been in a correctional facility since December 2021. Mohamed AghanajShe explained that the jail time was almost over. From the time of his incarceration, the defendant will only spend a month and a few more days in prison.
Clausi’s BTC purchases were fraudulent and illegal
A few years ago, the accused bought a Ferrari car for 440,000 BTC from a French woman in Morocco. The woman later reported him to the authorities for fraud.
Clausi also bought three luxury watches from another man, but gave him a fake check and took the man to authorities.
In the first instance, the defendant made payments using crypto, which was not legalized in Morocco. Therefore, the country’s local laws considered the method illegal. In the second case, Clausi defrauded another person with a check that could not be processed due to lack of funds.
These incident reports started the court case against the Frenchman that led to his detention in December 2021. Now the court has ordered him to pay the watch’s owner a sum of 40,000 MAD or US$4,000. He also pays the customs authorities the sum of 3.4 million euros.
