“Creator royalties must be respected,” says Bored Ape Creator while blocking some Sewer Pass NFT trades

As marketplaces moving to stop (or possibly stop) Enforcement of creator royalties on NFT sales late last year, the creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club made their position clear: they didn’t love it. With the launch of Sewer Pass NFT yesterday, Yuga Labs took direct action and blocked secondary trading on certain marketplaces.

The Sewer Pass was opened on Wednesday for Bored Ape and Bored Ape owners respectively Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs and serves as an access card about the upcoming web game Dookey Dash. Only Ape NFT owners can mint a free pass, but the ether NFT Passes can then be freely resold through secondary marketplaces.

Well, only certain marketplaces.

As traders quickly found out yesterday, the Sewer Pass cannot be traded on some platforms that don’t fully enforce the license fees set by the creator. A royalty is a fee – typically between 5% and 10% – that is deducted from the selling price of the NFT and automatically paid to the project creator with each transaction.

OpenSea and X2Y2 have seen increasing activity, with combined sales of over $19 million in Sewer Pass as of early Wednesday, according to data from CryptoSlam. NFTs start at 1.59 ETH (about $2,400) apiece, at the time of this writingwith “Tier 4” versions at OpenSea starting at almost 4.9 ETH (around $7,550) each.

However, marketplaces like Blur, LooksRare, and NFTX — which don’t require merchants to pay full creator royalties — don’t seem able to handle the pass. A representative from Yuga Labs confirmed that all three marketplaces in Sewer Pass are locked smart contractwhich contains the driving code decentralized applications (dapps) and NFT projects.

“We’ve always been a creative company, and we believe that creators’ royalties need to be protected,” said a Yuga Labs representative decryptshows Post from November from the founders on this topic. “Free Sewer Pass entitlement will only be traded on platforms that respect creator royalties.”

Yuga has made a win for the whole ecosystem today, especially for the creators who don’t have that big of a voice. @blur_io and @LooksRare are forced to see thousands of ETH in @BoredApeYC Sewer Pass that they are locked out of.

None of these blocked marketplaces have commented publicly on the matter as of this writing. Blur lists channel passes, but they are all aggregated entries from OpenSea or X2Y2; The sale does not take place directly via the company’s own platform. LooksRare has Sewer Pass NFTs listed, but shows no record of them being sold. NFTX has no Sewer Pass NFT records.

The Yuga representative said that Sudoswap is a trading platform built around liquidity pools Instead of traditional marketplaces, trading in Sewer Pass NFTs is also blocked – along with Blur, LooksRare and NFTX. Sudoswap does not respect creator’s license fee settings.

However, Sudoswap may bypass the smart contract as it shows that the NFTs are in place regularly bought and sold over the last day. Yuga did not comment on this specific detail when asked.

The Royalty Debate

Yuga’s move to block certain marketplaces follows the launch of OpenSea’s blacklist tool Operator Filter Registry, which the leading NFT marketplace publicly launched in November to reconsider its stance on royalty enforcement.

OpenSea later obliged to enforce royalties for new projects using the tool as well as all older projects started up to a certain date. X2Y2, a competing NFT marketplace that had previously made royalty optional for merchants, then said so would take over the tool and require full license fees for distributors of these projects.

Before the move from OpenSea, the generative graphics project QQL-from Art Blocks Fidenza Artist Tyler Hobbs and collaborator Dandelion Wist – made their own move to blocking marketplaces that didn’t automatically enforce royalties. That included X2Y2 and the platform back then supposedly in a tweet thread that the move reduced the property rights of NFT collectors.

The Royalty Debate consumed the NFT space last fall like some marketplaces Eliminated Royalty Requirements in an effort to steal market share from incumbents. It’s a divisive issue and movements restricting NFT owners’ ability to buy and sell at will have similarly divided traders, with some claiming this contradicts it Web3 ethos of decentralization.

In November, when OpenSea faced with a backlash from the Creator after declaring that they are considering a model that does not enforce royalties on all projects, three of the co-founders of Yuga Labs railed against the possible move in a blog post.

“OpenSea has made it clear that they intend to move with the rest of the herd and remove legacy collection creator royalties from their platform while their trading fee remains the same everywhere,” the founders of Yuga wrote, adding: ” Not great. ”

Yuga Labs proposed a “permission list” model that would allow NFT project creators to allow trading only on specific marketplaces that respect royalty payments, with list management led by a community DAO, or decentralized autonomous organization. However, OpenSea then said that was the case in fact still pay royalties on secondary trade for existing collections.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club and its associated collections are one of the most popular NFT projects in the world over $6 billion Value of total trading volume to date. The Sewer Pass gives access to the Dookey Dash game which can unlock future NFT rewards for top players. The forthcoming free claim boosted Bored Ape NFT sales last week.

Yuga Laboratories Raised $450 million at a valuation of $4 billion in early 2022 and also acquired the influential CryptoPunks projectmaking it one of the biggest players in the Web3 space.

The earlier pressure may have played a role in OpenSea’s decision-making regarding license fee enforcement. We’ll see if it does the same now with marketplaces missing out on the Sewer Pass trade.
