After their acquittal, the Public Prosecutor’s Office (DPP) initiated the trial and called eight witnesses to prove the case against the couple. The couple subsequently did not file a lawsuit after the criminal case concluded on October 12, 2021. However, the court denied the request in a ruling on November 24, 2021, prompting her to open her defense. On January 17, the couple, in their defense, told the court that Joy had been caught with noodles and beaten the day before the incident because she was fond of stealing groceries from their home. The woman, Fortune, said the deceased denied stealing the groceries but claims she bought them with her money. Fortune also told the court that she had a conversation with the deceased after the incident, during which she apologized and agreed not to do it again. According to her, when the deceased asked Joy what she would have for dinner, she said she would not eat anything until the next day. “The next morning I called her in the kitchen but there was no answer. So I went to her room and when I opened the door I saw her hanging from the ceiling. “I screamed and called my husband and told him in our dialect that Joy killed herself, he screamed too. “I called one of our neighbors to see what had happened and after that my husband called his father and he later went to the police station to report the incident. “I was also asked to report to the police station and make statements. The police arrested me. During my detention, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), thumbprints and blood samples were taken from me. “From there I was taken to court and committed to Kirikiri Correctional Facility,” she told the court.
