Cardano (ADA), Solana (SOL) and Polkadot (DOT) are soaring – Is it peak season?

Bitcoin (BTC) underwent a sharp correction on December 11, plunging as much as 8% to a four-month low of $40,150, erasing gains over the past seven days.

This drop in BTC price has triggered a market-wide revaluation and sparked debate about the potential of altcoins to lead the next significant rally in the cryptocurrency landscape.

Market experts and analysts believe that the recent price drop is part of the ongoing price cycle and that a correction was inevitable after two months of an uptrend.

Analysts' insights into Bitcoin's recent decline

Will Clemente, crypto analyst and co-founder of Reflexivity Research, interpreted the market correction as a means to shed weak positions and reduce heavily leveraged crypto markets, attributing this volatility to a necessary phase of market development.

BTC has just roughly doubled in two months without any setbacks, so a correction isn't that surprising.

Corrections eliminate “weak hands” and leverage, creating a stronger foundation for eventual upward moves.

Additionally, Kaleo, co-founder of NFT project LedgArt, expressed his belief at X that the recent downturn was “nothing more than a healthy correction after a massive parabolic extension.”

According to Kaleo, the flagship cryptocurrency has defined a “new range” within which it is expected to consolidate over the next few months before scaling higher.

As I discussed in yesterday's stream, the recent decline we had was nothing but a healthy correction after a massive parabolic extension.

I believe we have defined the upper and lower bounds of a new range within which we will likely trade over the next month or two… pic.twitter.com/JOizKeJq3Q

Market research firm Santiment pointed to a significant increase in social media posts advocating “buying on dips.”

“#Crypto has seen its fastest decline in four months as markets corrected, sparking mild concerns among traders. There is a high level of #buythedip calls, which usually means there is a bit of overzealousness and #FOMO at these low prices. ”

Bitcoin may have recovered from multi-month lows, but the big winners right now are altcoins as many cryptocurrencies have outperformed BTC over the last week.

Altcoins have gained on almost every time frame

Altcoins have posted major returns over the past seven days, outperforming Bitcoin. Some of them have performed better over longer periods of time.

According to data from CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin has fallen 1% over the past seven days, while Cardano (ADA) has gained 49%. Avalanche (AVAX), Polkadot (DOT), Solana (SOL), and Binance Coin (BNB) have also outperformed Bitcoin in the last week.

More importantly, while the pioneer cryptocurrency is up about 60% over the past 90 days to $44,000, many altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over the same period. AVAX competes particularly strongly with BTC and has almost tripled in the last three months. SOL and ADA are up 267% and 150%, respectively.

On the shorter time frame, Cardano is leading gains among the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization after rising 12% in the last 24 hours. The other top Layer 1 token Solana is in second place with 10% of daily gains, while Polkadot's DOT is up 9.2% over the same period.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin only saw a 3% gain on December 13 despite reclaiming the key $42,000 mark, suggesting that it is still underperforming altcoins. But can we really talk about the start of another altcoin season?

Has altcoin season arrived?

Crypto trader Remen wrote in an X (formerly Twitter) post that he believes the recent decline could push altcoins into another bull market. He added that it would take a long time for the major cryptocurrency to resume its uptrend as BTC dominance has peaked.

I have repeatedly told you about flash dumps

Now the dump is complete

It will take a long time for Bitcoin to resume its uptrend

Bitcoin dominance has reached its peak

We are now entering the real OLD SEASON

Although there are some signs, it may still be too early to confirm altcoin season. Altcoins are digital assets other than Bitcoin, and the crypto community recognizes an altcoin season when the majority (at least 75%) of the top 50 coins by market cap outperform Bitcoin for 90 days. This has only been seen on a few altcoins, and it remains to be seen whether others will follow suit.

According to data from Blockchain Center, only 53% of top altcoins have outperformed BTC over the past three months. Although this is a positive sign, it is not yet enough to declare an altcoin season.

Additionally, Bitcoin's market cap dominance is still at over 50% since surpassing that level on October 1st, reaching its highest level in over two and a half years at 55.26% on October 6th.

Bitcoin’s dominance fell to 52% on December 11th, and as the price continued to fall, the crypto community began chanting the start of “altcoin season.” At the time of writing, BTC dominance is back at around 53.06%, just above its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA).

However, it remains to be seen whether the oldest cryptocurrency will hold its position or whether the altcoins will continue to rise, with the short-term view showing that the cryptocurrency markets could remain in a certain range.
