British authorities seize £1.4 billion worth of Bitcoin linked to a Chinese investment fraud scheme

British authorities seized 61,000 BTC worth about 1.4 billion pounds (or $1.78 billion) in connection with an investment fraud committed in China, the Financial Times reported.

The fraud mastermind, Zhimin Qian, converted part of the profits from a £5 billion investment scam carried out in China between 2014 and 2017 into the leading cryptocurrency to enable the smooth transfer of money out of the Asian country.

Qian, now identified as Yadi Zhang and holding a St Kitts and Nevis passport, moved to the UK in 2017. However, prosecutors said she has since fled the country and remains at large.

Authorities uncovered the fraudulent activities when Zhang enlisted the help of Jian Wen to launder the money, which eventually attracted attention when he tried to buy a £23.5 million mansion in London. This led to a police raid on their £17,000 per month rental apartment, which resulted in the seizure of numerous digital wallets containing the 61,000 BTC.

Although Wen was not involved in the original fraud, he faces three counts of money laundering. Prosecutors alleged she helped Zhang convert the digital assets into cash, jewelry and other luxury goods and property, even though she knew they were the proceeds of crime.

In particular, their attempts to buy properties, including an eight-bedroom house with a cinema and a gym worth £12.5 million, with BTC failed because they could not explain the source.

Wen has pleaded not guilty and claimed she was merely Zhang's carer.

Meanwhile, this seizure is in line with a broader trend of UK authorities cracking down on illegal cryptocurrency activity. On January 26, the National Crime Agency announced the seizure of $150 million linked to a multi-million dollar drug operation.

In the global context, the US and German authorities have recently taken similar measures. On January 30, German police announced that they had seized a record $2.3 billion in illegal cryptocurrency from a piracy website.
