Bitcoin sentiment back to greed as BTC breaks $28,900

Data shows that sentiment around Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market has turned back to greed as the price of BTC surpassed $29,000.

Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index Now Pointing to “Greed”

The Fear & Greed Index is an indicator that tells us something about the general mood among investors in the bitcoin and wider cryptocurrency sector. The metric uses a numeric scale ranging from 0 to 100 to represent this sentiment.

Any readings of the index below the 50 level suggest that investors are fearful at the moment, while readings above this level suggest the market is greedy at the moment. Although this cutoff can theoretically be clean, the range between the values of 46 and 54 (i.e. the boundary of the two sentiments) is considered neutral sentiment.

There are also two “extreme” feelings, called extreme fear and extreme greed, that occur below 25 and above 75, respectively. These mentalities have had historical significance for the market as cyclical lows have formed in the former region while highs have formed in the latter.

Because of this, some investors believe that buying in extreme fear is ideal, while extreme greed offers the best selling opportunities. Followers of this philosophy are called “contrarian traders”. Warren Buffet’s popular quote sums up the same idea well: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.”

This is what the fear and greed index currently looks like for the bitcoin and general cryptocurrency markets:

As you can see above, the Fear & Greed Index currently has a value of 56, which means that investors in the overall market are greedy at the moment. However, just yesterday the mentality in the sector was different as holders shared a neutral sentiment.

As can be seen from the chart, the Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index was stuck in the fear and extreme fear zones during the 2022 bear market, but this year’s rally allowed sentiment to return to neutral and greedy levels.

Between March 18th and April 19th, the indicator had maintained relatively high greed readings, but the recent price drop from over $30,000 to the low $27,000 level naturally meant that the market mentality suffered as well.

In the days that followed, investors expected neutral sentiment (barring a brief spike in greed on the 23rd). However, as the price surged above $29,000 in the last 24 hours, the indicator has bounced back to greed levels.

It is currently unclear whether the bitcoin market can sustain this newfound momentum or if this is just a temporary upswing. At the very least, overall investor sentiment suggests they support the rise.
