Bitcoin mining difficulty reaches 81T in pre-halving boost

In preparation for the upcoming halving this year, Bitcoin mining difficulty has seen a significant increase as it has risen to unprecedented levels.

Bitcoin mining difficulty and hash rate eye on ATH

Data from BTC.com shows The Bitcoin mining difficulty, which usually indicates the difficulty of discovering new Bitcoin blocks through mining, has exceeded 80 trillion. Specifically, Bitcoin mining difficulty is currently at 81.73 trillion, with the hash rate now reaching 562.89 EH/s.

In perspective, the higher Bitcoin mining difficulty for BTC's Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism means that miners would have to use more computing power and energy to determine the correct hash for each block. It is important to increase the difficulty level to meet the target block time.

Notably, this milestone was discovered on February 16th and the highly anticipated Bitcoin halving is only about two months away. During the halving, Bitcoin mining rewards will be cut and the reward is expected to drop from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.

This truncation can cause the hash rate to drop since the less efficient miners It is very likely that the costs will not be covered and it will eventually go offline. Galaxy Digital analysts are already confident that after the Bitcoin halving, up to 20% of Bitcoin's current hash rate could go offline, leaving only the most efficient mining rigs.

A decrease in hash rate also leads to a decrease in Bitcoin mining difficulty.

Mining difficulty is expected to increase by 6%

The ongoing trend in Bitcoin Mining difficulty has been running since the beginning of last year and trend watchers are very optimistic that it could rise to up to 100 trillion by the end of 2024.

Last year the level of difficulty in mining more than doubled compared to the previous year. According to the automated adjustment dated February 15, Bitcoin difficulty is expected to increase by an estimated 6%. If this prevails, BTC mining difficulty will reach a new all-time high well above 80 trillion for the first time.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is showing positive momentum as the halving approaches. The coin has reached extraordinary highs in recent days and is currently trading at $50,758.92. Several analysts are convinced of this BTC may rise to a higher price before the halving event.
