Regan Poole’s goal in Wigan was his third goal of the season for Portsmouth
Portsmouth cemented their position at the top of League One with a hard-fought 2-1 win over 10-man Wigan.
The home team, which was in the relegation zone due to its eight-point deduction, started better and took the lead after 27 minutes.
Charlie Wyke and Scott Smith fed the ball to Martial Godo and the on-loan Fulham winger fired into the back of the net.
However, the lead only lasted four minutes as Colby Bishop headed forward Jack Sparkes’ corner and Regan Poole provided the finishing touch.
Portsmouth took the lead eight minutes before half-time when Paddy Lane fired the ball past Sam Tickle from a slight deflection from Kell Watts.
Wigan’s task became even more difficult when Wyke was shown a red card four minutes after the restart for a rash attack on Marlon Pack.
But the home side never gave up and received an apparent penalty for handball, which involved both benches in the technical area and left Wigan number two Graham Barrow and his Portsmouth counterpart Jon Harley receiving yellow cards.
