Ireland captain Johnny Sexton’s playing career came to an end last night with defeat in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup but he is backing the team to continue achieving success.

Andy Farrell’s side lost 28-24 to New Zealand in an epic round of 16 tie in Paris.

The game also marked the retirement of Sexton’s centenarian Keith Earls.

The other two quarter-final games take place on Sunday.

Having topped their squad, England will be aiming to secure a place in the last four against Fiji. The game in Marseille starts at 4 p.m.

All eyes will be on Paris in the 8pm game as hosts France take on defending champions South Africa.

Wales resume their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign later.

Rob Page’s team will face Croatia in Group D.

Wales sit fourth in the group before the game, but a win tonight would take them level with Croatia in second.

Kick-off in Cardiff is at 7.45pm.

Today there is a Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton in the Women’s Super League.

The two teams meet at Anfield from 4.30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Manchester United are level with Leicester City at 1-1 with just over 80 minutes to go, while Manchester City leads Bristol City 4-0 just before half-time.

Arsenal play Aston Villa at 2pm before Brighton take on Tottenham from 4pm.
