Vivianne Miedema: Arsenal striker’s departure is a ‘shocking decision’

Arsenal’s decision not to extend Vivianne Miedema’s contract is “absolutely shocking”, according to former Gunners striker Ellen White.

The club announced on Monday that the Dutch international will leave the club at the end of the season after seven years.

The 27-year-old is the Women’s Super League’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals and has scored a total of 125 goals and provided 50 assists in 172 appearances for Arsenal.

“Honestly I think it’s an absolutely shocking decision from the club,” White told ` Radio 5 Live’s Women’s Football Weekly.

“Not to offer her a new contract, not to show her love and desire to keep her at the club, not to build a team around Vivianne Miedema.”

Miedema won the Women’s Super League title in 2018/19 and three Women’s League Cups during her time in north London.

She has also lifted the Golden Boot – the award for the most goals scored in a season – twice.

“I just find it shocking that she wasn’t shown the love to want to keep her at the club,” White added.

“If she wants to go to someone else in the WSL, I hope she goes to this team and gives Arsenal two fingers, scores a few goals and celebrates hard.”

“She’s 27. If she wants to keep playing, she could play for a few more years and she still has records to break. That’s just outrageous.”

“She will have no shortage of offers. I hope she has lots of offers. Since she’s a free transfer, one would hope she would then get the contract she deserves.”
