TV ratings (October 6, 2024): Sports figures rise, Olympics get closer

It was a great night for sport on television, with the finals of the Australian Swimming Trials taking the top spot among the evening’s non-news programmes. The finals drew a whopping national TV reach of 1,846,000 viewers for the nine as Australia’s Ariarne Titmus raced to victory in the 400m freestyle final.

Titmus missed her own record, set last year at the World Championships in Fukuoka with a time of 3:55.44, by just 0.06 seconds – securing her place in Paris 2024.

“Swimming so close to the record gives me a lot of confidence. The goal is not to do my best here, but simply to book my ticket,” she told the media at the poolside. “I’m excited to see what I can achieve in Paris now.”

On Seven, it was another big day of sport driving numbers, with the AFL finishing just behind swimming. A total of 1,768,000 viewers tuned in on national television as Collingwood dominated the Melbourne Football Club 89-51.

For the non-sports fans among us, MasterChef provided plenty of entertainment, achieving a national TV reach of 1,424,000 viewers for Network Ten with the launch of ‘Sweet Week’. Adriano Zumbo kicked things off with a Jell-O Mystery Box and contestants competed to make a perfectly wobbly candy to win the precious immunity.
