After questions arose over whether Martin Truex Jr. would retire at the end of the season, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver laid those questions down on Saturday afternoon.
Truex announced the news to the media after securing fifth place in qualifying ahead of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.
“I’ll be back,” Truex said.
When asked why, he was blunt.
“Because I want to (laughter),” Truex added.
As the 2017 Cup Series champion went through the decision-making process, he believes it was the right decision.
“The more I thought about it, the more I thought, ‘Don’t be stupid, go race for another year and see how it goes,'” Truex said.
Part of his decision was due to a recovering season for the 43-year-old, which sees him currently top of the table with three wins.
While success on the track certainly helps, Truex thinks he wants to continue the way he and JGR No. 19 team stick together for the foreseeable future.
“That’s what takes so long to figure out,” Truex admitted. “I’ve obviously come to terms with all of this and look forward to continuing with all of this. It’s part of the job. It belongs to the territory. You will not do this job half-heartedly. I’m ready. I’m excited. We have a great thing going.
“My team is great. They do great things. I enjoy working with them and look forward to continuing to do so.”
