The New Orleans Saints announce the hiring of Matt Rhea as director of sports science

Prior to his successful stint at Bloomington, he was Head of Exercise Science at IMG Academy from 2016-2017. There he contributed to the optimal development of athletes through innovative assessments and advanced strength and conditioning training. Rhea founded a consulting firm in 2001, supporting NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams, international Olympic programs and collegiate athletic departments. He instructed his clients in areas such as speed training, injury prevention and performance optimization.

Rhea rose to become an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at AT Still University, where he taught courses in exercise conditioning and exercise physiology. Rhea has published nearly 100 studies on performance enhancement in sport and has lectured in seven different countries. While at school, he played football at UNLV and Southern Utah University for three years. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Southern Utah in 1998, a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Physical Education from Arizona State in 2001, and a Master of Science in Sports Management from the American Public University in 2016. In 2004, he received his PhD from Arizona State University in philosophy with an academic focus in exercise and exercise science and a research focus on improving athletic performance.

Rhea and his wife Kellie have five sons, Isaac, Jake, Ethan, Kelen and Karsten.
