Another sports destination is coming to the Valley as Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. recently acquired a vacant lot near Glendale's Westgate Entertainment District where it will reportedly expand its new concept called Dick's House of Sport next year.
The national retailer has already introduced the concept in Illinois, Minnesota, New York and Texas. In addition to the store's usual sporting goods, there will be a rock wall, golf tees and cages for practicing baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and even hockey.
House of Sport locations include services for golfers to tune, fit or refit clubs, as well as bicycle repair technicians. Baseball players can also have their gloves steamed and custom shaped or test bats in the HitTrax batting cage.
The Phoenix Business Journal first reported the purchase of about 11 acres of undeveloped land at the northwest corner of Loop 101 and Maryland Avenue for $10.6 million.
A company representative could not immediately be reached for comment Monday morning.
Dick's plans to bring House of Sport to Arizona come as Scheels, another popular Midwest-based sporting goods retailer, recently opened its first location in the state.
The new Scheels store in Chandler, which occupies 220,000 square feet in the Chandler Fashion Center, offers shoppers the opportunity to find their favorite sports gear and apparel, including an Arizona Cardinals fan shop.
It's also a family-friendly destination with arcade games, sports simulators, a saltwater aquarium, a wildlife mountain and a Ferris wheel. Scheel visitors can also fortify themselves in Fuzziwig's Candy Factory or Ginna's Café.
