DENVER — There’s a reason it’s called “home advantage.” The Nuggets have won every single home playoff game this year — until losing to the Miami Heat in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night.
The odds were in for the Nuggets and Simon Cundall – like many others – bet on it.
According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, of the more than $12 billion wagered on sports betting over the past three years, $11.9 billion was wagered online by people using apps like Cundall.
“I think for the NFL it was like once a week on game day, you know, a parlay that runs all weekend. It was more for the NBA,” he said.
The same could be said of many others. Sports betting has been legal in Colorado since May 2020. During those three years, the most bets were placed on professional basketball.
Data shows people have wagered more than $2.9 billion in professional basketball. Professional American football followed with $1.9 billion. Rounding out the top 5 are baseball, NCAA basketball, and tennis.
“I think in basketball people have a general understanding of the rules and how betting works. It’s really simple compared to other sports like horse racing or football, but it can be a bit complicated,” Cundall said. “I think it’s a good entry point and there are so many games happening from October to now that the opportunity for that is much greater than in some other sports.”
But like any game in life, there is a risk.
“I would say stick to your limit and make it fun and enjoy it,” Cundall said.
Many people in Colorado are concerned about problem gambling. Earlier this year, the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission awarded $1.5 million in awards to projects that directly address problem gambling, addiction treatment and counseling.
