HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – A celebration Monday evening marked the grand opening of the brand new and long-awaited Henrico Sports & Events Center.
Whether it's for a concert or a basketball game, the Henrico Sports & Events Center is officially open and ready to serve the community. With a wide selection of craft beers, Industrial Taphouse in the nearby town of Ashland is ready to welcome new customers coming to the area for the brand new facility.
“It’s great to be here on I-95 and so close to something like this,” said Delaney Lee, manager of Industrial Taphouse. “A lot of groups and families come here looking for local crafts, things they can’t get at home or wherever they come from.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration Monday evening marked the beginning of a new era for Henrico County. The Henrico High School marching band welcomed guests to a portion of the 17,000-square-foot facility that has been hosting events since October.
Several speakers, including Henrico County Supervisor Frank Thorton, emphasized the economic impact the center will have on the community.
“We’ve already secured bookings,” Thornton said. “Can you believe we have secured bookings for tournaments and events for 46 weekends? [of] 2024?”
The Henrico Sports & Events Center will host the 2024 and 2025 A-10 Women's Basketball Tournament
The facility features an arena that can accommodate up to 4,500 guests and accommodate up to 12 basketball courts or 24 volleyball courts at a time.
The space can host not only sporting events, but also school graduations, concerts and even children's soccer leagues.
On Monday, Dec. 11, the center will host its first Division I college basketball game between the women's teams from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Delaware.
